History of St. Mary's School

150th Year Anniversary of St. Mary's School

1863 - 2013

On the 2nd of November 1863 St Mary’s Catholic Primary School first opened its doors to the pupils of Studley. Things have changed a great deal since those times but many of the traditions and practices still remain to this day. Fifteen head teachers and two world wars have come and gone and in 1975 the school moved from its original site on Church St to Pool Road.

Luckily our school still retains the original log books and a huge amount of our social history has been obtained from them. Coupled together with information and photographs supplied from parents, parishioners and the Studley Historical Society our teachers and staff have managed to bring to life some of the fascinating local stories and history of our school.

Victorian Week - November 2013

During our Victorian Week pupils had an opportunity to learn about life in the past. We had special visitors into school who shared their memories of life at St Mary’s, and children received several special lessons.  Some Year 4 children learnt to bake victoria sponge cakes with Mrs Drust; and Mrs Ellis and Mrs Owen taught the children knitting skills and Year 1 children had an opportunity to write on slates and play with Victorian toys.

The week culminated in a spectacular Victorian Day with the staff and children all dressing up for the occasion. Above are just a selection of pictures to give you a flavour of the day but many more are available on our twitter site.

The press from the Standard and the Advertiser were also interested and articles on the event will be published soon.

The school has put on an exhibition of photos and memorabilia and all parents are invited to come and have a look if they have the opportunity.

We have collated many of the photographs on a PowerPoint presentation, take a look:

Thank you to all who made the effort to make this a super event.

Thank you also to the PTA who kindly funded the leather bookmarks which were distributed to all staff and children this week to mark our 150th anniversary. They are a fitting and useful momento to mark the milestone.
