School Curriculum

This is a Catholic School which seeks to live out the value of Jesus Christ. We promote these values by our words and deeds, and Catholic doctrine and practise therefore permeates every aspect of the school’s activity. We provide a Catholic curriculum, which is broad and balanced, recognising that every pupil is unique and is created in the image of God. Our curriculum is designed to enable every pupil to discern their vocation and to be well equipped to follow it as active citizens in service to the world.

Catholic Religious Education is the “core of the core curriculum” (Pope St Paul II*) and the foundation of the entire educational process.  We also provide a wide range of extra -curricular activities and strong pastoral support. We incorporate democratic principles, value the rule of law, support individual liberty and foster a community in which different faiths and beliefs are respected.

Throughout the school the children are taught in mixed ability classes in the care of their own class teacher with the support of the teaching assistants.

The school has a seven class structure. The structure of each class will be reviewed at the end of each year to ensure that the best possible support for pupils is given.

In line with the National Curriculum, pupils are taught subjects which are placed in the following categories.


English, Maths, Science, RE, Computing.


The Foundation subjects are: History, Geography, Music, Science, PE, Computing, Art & Design and Technology. As of 2014 the new National Curriculum is fully in place. A Modern Foreign Language is statutory and St. Mary’s will be teaching Spanish to all Key Stage 2 children. These subjects have their own programmes of study and methods of assessment and recording children’s work have been developed.  Whenever possible cross-curricular approaches are encouraged.

Personal, Social and Health Education and Computing are incorporated into all areas of the curriculum.  A detailed Curriculum Guide is available for all classes on the school website - see below for downloads.

Infant children are taught within the National Curriculum Key Stage 1 framework.  Children in Reception will be taught within the Early Years Framework.  At the end of Year 2 and Year 6 pupils are subject to the National Standard Assessment Tests (SATs).  Parents will be informed of the procedures and results at the appropriate times.  

KS1 Reading Schemes

The spine of the Key Stage 1 reading  scheme is  made up of books from the Rigby Rockets Reading Scheme and Ginn 360, however  these are supplemented and enhanced by books from various other schemes which  target specific areas of  reading  for  example boy readers and  non fiction texts. These include books from Spiral Starters (for our  youngers readers), National Geographic, Big Cat, The Oxford Reading Tree and the Rapid Readers scheme.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Pupils enjoy many opportunities that are offered in addition to the normal curriculum. Children are encouraged to take part in the clubs and activities held at lunchtimes and before and after school at the appropriate times of the year. The school runs numerous clubs to suit both Key Stages throughout the week.
